Advice from a Tree... Remember Your Roots!

At the Raleigh, NC farewell reception for Doug & Darcy Orr, Fran Moffitt Whitfield '55, presented the Orrs with a special framed poem, "Advice from a Tree." In Fran's words...

Doug Orr and Fran Whitfield

WWC Alumna, Fran Moffitt Whitfield '55, presents President Doug Orr with the special poem "Advice from a Tree."

I felt the words of Ilan Shamir fit perfectly, for Doug Orr’s presidency and for the College. Prior to presenting the poem, I introduced myself and told the story of how I first came to Warren Wilson.

I worked at a fruit stand in Asheville as a teenager with my friend Margaret where two boys from WWC used to come by a lot. One day they asked us, "Why don’t you girls come out to WWC and go to college?" We said, we didn’t have any money. The boys encouraged us to apply and explained that the College offered scholarships. Much to my surprise, I was accepted and given the scholarships I needed to attend; thus began the most memorable years of my life.

Scholarship recipients met their benefactors at the 2006 Scholarship Luncheon in spring 2006.

Like most alumni, I realize that I would not be where I am today without Warren Wilson College. And as a graduate, I recognize the generosity of those who supported the College and who enabled me to attend. Their support helped me lay down roots in my life so I could grow in ways I never thought possible.

Recently I had the privilege of attending a luncheon for scholarship donors and student recipients. I was extremely impressed by these young people, their goals, their love of service and their drive. And they were so appreciative of the donors that are making it possible for them to attend Warren Wilson College.

So to Doug, Darcy, and all WWC alumni, I encourage you to heed the tree's advice: "Remember your roots" from your time at Warren Wilson College.

Advice from a Tree

Dear Friend,
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of your true self
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter

Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!
